Leonard Megson

Leonard was Janettes 3rd Cousin

Leonard joined the 4th battalion of the York and Lancasters on 4th March 1912 age 17 yrs 6 months. He was 5 foot 3 inches and weighed 114lbs. He had worked as a sheet miller for J.Furton in Vulcan Forge. He was made sergeant in 1916 and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 4th March 1918 according to the following citation;

"Awarded DCM vide sup for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He defied his company commanders orders and attempted to capture a 'pill-box' which was held by a superior number of the enemy. They continued the advance until only three of the party were left until he was severely wounded."

He was shot in the buttock on 14th October 1917, and he eventually died in Boulogne hospital on 21st October 1917.
He was Serjeant 200144 4th York & Lancs.
