Walter was Martin's Great Grandfather

My Gt Grandfather moved to was in the Territorial Force in 1913 with the Lincolnshire Reg. On changing employment to work for Woodhouse & Rixson and moving to Sheffield in 1914 he transferred to the Hallamshire Bn. Hence the Sheffield connection, he resided with family at Stephenson Rd, Attercliffe. His future wife was working as a servant in Broomhill, Sheffield when they met.
He was at the Whitby training camp when war was declared and signed up 5th August 1914 to serve abroad with the Bn.
He was with the Bn all through 1914, 1915 and until Nov 1916 when he received a severe head wound on the Somme at Hebuturne. He was then put in reserve and chose to stay on as an instructor being transferred about various units - 2nd East Riding Yeomanry, and 2 different Bn's of Yorkshire Reg. Eventually ending up at Clipstone Camp and also then to Rugely Camp.
He started out as a Private in the Hallamshires, was made a Lance Cpl, then shortly after a substantive (temporary) Sgt. In all subsequent units he was immediately reduced to L/Cpl then shortly after re-promoted to Subst. Sgt.
On photo's he clearly has a marksmen qualification badge and my Grandfathers recollections are that he was one of the Bn. snipers.

Born at Trinity, Lincoln he died at Rotherham on 18/7/1944.
