William Wood

William was Shirley’s Great grandfather.

Born at Sheffield on 12/3/1876, William enlisted for the war at Sheffield.
He saw service in the South African war in his early days.
During the Great War he was # 200485, Company Sergeant Major of ‘B’ Company of the 1/4th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment.
He was awarded the Belgium Croix de Guerre, Military Medal, DCM and also mentioned in despatches on 9th April 1917.
Williams brother also served, he was # 200440, Sergeant George Wood, who fell at Loos on 12th June 1917.

William was to die at Sheffield in 1940, him being gassed in the war contributed to his death.
