David’s Grandfather was David William Joseph Powell

Private 6307 2nd Border Regiment

William Powell worked as a railway worker at the Royal Victoria Railway Station in Sheffield. He was also working at a steel works at the back of the North Pole public house just off Effingham Street.
He was born at Hampstead, London on 21/6/1880 to parents Andrew and Jane Powell, nee Jenkins. William had 3 sisters, Sarah, Jane and Catherine, and also 2 brothers, Andrew and James.

William enlisted with the Border Regiment on 20/10/1990 at London.
After a marriage in Carlisle to Sarah Starkey on 15/9/1906 he and his wife moved to Sheffield with the regiment in 1907. William and Sarah had 4 children, Mary Jane, born at Carlisle in 1906, Margaret, born at Sheffield in 1909, and William, 1911, and Evelyn, 1915 also both born at Sheffield.
William being a reservist was called up just after the outbreak of war in September 1914.

William was killed at Neuve Chapelle in France on 12/3/15.
