John Clifton was Mick's Grandfaither

John Clifton Marcer was my grandfather and was in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Petty Officer Mechanic F1148. He joined the RNAS on 4 November 1914 working on armoured cars seeing service in France until 1917, then working on flying boats at RNAS Tresco in the Scilly Isles.

He was born 21 May 1892, was sent to France on 1 September 1915 which entitled him to 1915 Star, Victory & British War medal.

 

His brother Eli also served, he was in the Royal Field Artillery. His Medal Index Card shows that he was a member of the Territorial Force – Regimental Number 1648. He entered the France theatre of war on 15 April 1915 which entitled him to 1915 Star, Victory & British War medal. His Regimental Number later changed to 785477.

 

The 1901 census shows them living with their parents Eli & Lucy Marcer at Branch Bank, Ecclesall Bierlow

The 1911 census shows them living with their parents Eli & Lucy Marcer at 308 School Road Crookes, Sheffield
