John William Maltby

John William was Ian's Great Uncle

 

Known as "Willie" to family, was eldest of five children. Went to the Western front with 383rd Battery of the 179th Brigade, RFA, on 12th May 1917. Served with this unit until early April 1918 when transferred to "B" Battery of the 180th Brigade, RFA. Was badly injured by shellfire in the early hours of 1st May, 1918, along with several others. Was taken to the 54th Casualty Clearing Station near Aire, with serious head and facial injuries, but never regained consciousness and died later that day. He buried in a makeshift cemetery close by, with a wooden cross. After the war this became the Aire Communal Cemetery.
