Submitted by Lyn Howsam

George was Lyn’s paternal grandfather.

George Andrew Johnston was born in Workington but moved to Sheffield c1910 with his wife and family. He worked in the steelworks. My grandfather is said to have served in the 1st World War in the R.A.M.C. (Royal Army Medical Corps) with the Border and West Yorkshire Regiment attaining the rank of sergeant and according to his youngest son, won the Military Medal. He was also a member of St Johns Ambulance brigade. I have been unable to find any records of his service in WW1.
Born in 1886 he died at Sheffield in 1947.
