Hugh Brooke

Hugh was Phillip’s great uncle.
Born at Wortley on 29/9/1887, into a Wortley/Thurgoland family who worked in the iron industry, Hugh emigrated to Australia in 1911, he enlisted in 1914 with the AIF and served in Gallipoli before joining the BEF in France and Belgium. He was killed in action on 10/8/1917, at Zillebeke Lake during the 3rd Ypres battle. He has no marked grave and is remembered at the Menin Gate (Panel 31).
Hugh was Gunner 3706 V1a, 1st Division Artillery Trench Mortar Brigade with the Australian Imperial Force.
The Burkinshaw family recently travelled to Ypres to participate in the Last Post ceremony and lay a wreath in remembrance & appreciation of Hugh and the sacrifice he and his comrades made.
